Kung Fu is Good for You!
The Portland School of Kung Fu has been teaching young people since 2016. We use the Ving Tsun system, which was developed over hundreds of years in China, and put an emphasis on character habits such as discipline, focus, and respect. Though children will learn powerful self-defense techniques appropriate for all sizes and strength levels, our training methods are very safe and suitable for children. All classes are supervised by qualified instructors, and anyone can begin with a one-on-one introductory lesson by clicking the link below.
After the intro lesson, children are taught separately from adults at the following times:
- Kids ages 6-12 Tues. and Thurs. 4:45pm-5:45pm
- Teens ages 13-18 See Adult Training Schedule
What’s a class like and what will my child learn?
Students play forms—specific sequences of movements—and do conditioning drills as a group. They also participate in fun training exercises, such as chasing a focus pad with punches and kicks. Under strict supervision, they will practice cooperative two-person drills. As a result of this training, they will develop focus, respect, confidence, strength, wit, creativity and so much more! Don’t be surprised if, after training with Portland Kung Fu, they start doing better in school or at home. Ving Tsun teaches us how to relax and be good people as well as defend ourselves.
What will teenagers get out of this?
Moy Tung Ving Tsun Kung Fu is real kung fu for real people facing real-world problems. As they train, teenagers will learn how to navigate the difficult transition between childhood and adulthood, developing self-esteem, discipline, motivation, respect and humility. They will cultivate the ability to defend themselves—and very well—but they will also learn how to get things done in a safe, values-driven environment.
